Alan W. Kornberg

Alan handles chapter 11 cases, cross-border insolvency matters, out-of-court restructurings, bankruptcy-related acquisitions and insolvency-sensitive transactions and investments. He has represented a diverse range of clients spanning numerous industries in some of the most complex and contentious bankruptcy proceedings in recent years. Alan represented the California Public Utilities Commission in the chapter 11 case of Pacific Gas & Electric Company, California’s largest investor-owned public utility and the largest public utility in U.S. history to file for bankruptcy relief. Mr. Kornberg received his J.D., from New York University School of Law and A.B., from Brandeis University.


Thomas Lauria

Thomas has played a pivotal role in the restructuring of more than US$100 billion of debt, in some of the largest and most complex restructurings in history. This significant track record has made him a go-to lawyer for clients involved in the toughest and most challenging of bankruptcies. He combines a deep understanding, based on more than 30 years’ experience, of the underlying legal principles, with a willingness to develop new and creative solutions and then to take on the difficult litigation challenges that often come into play in the insolvency arena. Most recently, Tom and his team he and his team successfully led Hertz out of chapter 11. Mr. Lauria received his J.D., from George C. Taylor Law Center, University of Tennessee as well as B.A from the University of Tennessee.


Gary H. Leibowitz

Gary maintains a national practice concentrated in the areas of corporate bankruptcy, creditors' rights, and commercial litigation. He also maintains a sports law practice and is a licensed agent. Clients rely on Gary’s strategic and experienced advice to craft comprehensive and creative solutions to complex financial and legal issues. Gary has served as debtors’ counsel in the retail, manufacturing, wholesale, real estate, auto and specialty products industries, among others. He has successfully restructured hundreds of millions of dollars of debt and coordinated the orderly disposition of a variety of distressed assets. Mr. Leibowitz earned his J.D., from the University of Miami School of Law and his B.A. from the University of Maryland.


Stephen D. Lerner

Stephen has an extensive national and cross-border restructuring practice in which he represents all types of parties in Chapter 9, 11 and 15 cases and out-of-court restructurings throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, South America and the Middle East. Having practiced for more than 35 years, Stephen has led the representation of clients in the Chapter 11 cases of Lehman Brothers, Enron, Chrysler, WorldCom, Ferrellgas, FirstEnergy Solutions, AmFin Financial, Blackjewel, Hartshorne Mining Group, Midway Gold, and EaglePicher, among many others. Stephen served as the Court Appointed Examiner in the precedent setting Purdue Pharma Chapter 11 case. In July 2022, the Ferrellgas restructuring team led by Stephen was named Turnaround of the Year (Large) by Global M&A Network. The Firm’s US restructuring team was named 2020 USA Restructuring Firm of the Year – Middle Markets by Global M&A Network.

What Stephen most enjoys about his career... The thing I most enjoy about being a restructuring lawyer is solving thorny, bet the company issues that our clients face. And, I enjoy working with a bright and creative team to find the right solutions for our clients.


Lorenzo Marinuzzi

Lorenzo represents debtors, creditors, and creditors’ committees in complex bankruptcy cases, workouts, and litigation. His cases have spanned the United States as well as countless industries, such as airline and cargo transportation, mortgage origination and servicing, retail, banking and finance, energy, oil and gas, and telecommunications. Lorenzo’s deep experience and capabilities advising on precedent-setting bankruptcy and restructuring matters have not gone unnoticed. Mr. Marinuzzi earned his J.D. and B.A., from the Fordham University.


Richard G. Mason

Ricky is a trusted senior leader, advisor and advocate in distressed situations. Over the course of his 35-year career, he has had leading roles in many of the largest and most complex bankruptcies and out of court restructurings in the United States and elsewhere, including, most recently, Delphi Corporation, Kerzner International, Energy Future Holdings, Bristow Helicopters, Hawker Beechcraft, Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority, LATAM Airlines and Boy Scouts of America. Ricky received a J.D. from New York University and graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a B.S. in Economics.


Thomas Moers Mayer

Tom has played a prominent role in many of the largest and most complex bankruptcy cases in history. His work involves both in- and out-of-court restructurings of distressed businesses on behalf of creditor committees, major secured and unsecured creditors, and bondholders. He has represented the official committees of unsecured creditors in some of the most well-known Chapter 11 cases, including those of General Motors, Chrysler, Capmark, Smurfit-Stone, Dana Corp., Seadrill, etc. Tom along with Amy Caton represented holders of more than $10 billion of bonds issued by Puerto Rico; the team has secured one victory in the U.S. Supreme Court and two in the First Circuit on behalf of the holders of $3.2 billion of bonds issued by the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority. Mr. Mayer received a J.D. from Harvard Law School and A.B. from Dartmouth College.


John Melko

John’s practice focuses on complex sales, acquisitions, bankruptcies and financings in the energy sector throughout the United States, as well as shipping-related issues in both foreign and domestic cases and financings. John has years of cross-border and multinational experience with oil and gas exploration and production, refining and marketing, airlines, telecommunications, electric utilities, manufacturing, retail, rig and ship finance, mass torts and asset-backed securities. He has represented borrowers and debtors in possession, creditors, securitized noteholders, trustees and investors in both in and out of restructuring or bankruptcy settings. Mr. Melko received his J.D., from South Texas College of Law and B.S. in Business Administration from Widener University.


Evelyn J. Meltzer

Evelyn focuses her practice on distressed M&A, corporate bankruptcy, and creditors’ rights. With more than 20 years of experience, Evelyn understands all facets of a problem or opportunity, strategically devising insightful, innovative, and practical solutions that protect and advance her clients’ interests. She regularly represents sellers and purchasers in distressed M&A transactions including Article 9 sales, asset sales conducted as part of assignments for the benefit of creditors (ABC), and sales conducted pursuant to section 363 of the Bankruptcy Code. Additionally, Evelyn has significant experience guiding corporate debtors, creditors’ committees, secured and unsecured creditors, and others through all aspects of complex Chapter 11 and Chapter 7 proceedings. She also represents companies and assignees in connection with Delaware ABC proceedings in the Delaware Chancery Court. Evelyn’s clients include both plaintiffs and defendants in bankruptcy-related litigation matters including avoidance actions.

What Evelyn most enjoys about her career... I love the challenge of coming up with creative and practical ideas to help my clients solve complex problems. Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to have some amazing mentors and I enjoy getting to mentor younger lawyers to help them succeed in their careers.


Michael D. Messersmith

Michael represents clients in distressed situations and bankruptcy proceedings throughout the United States and across the globe. He has recently represented lenders, steering committees, bondholders and syndicated bank agents in the following public in-court and out-of-court restructuring engagements: iHeartMedia, Petsmart, Revlon, Cumulus Media, Fusion Connect, Monitronics, Paragon Offshore., etc. While a sizable portion of Mr. Messersmith's practice involves representing financial institutions in large and middle-market restructuring situations, he also represents companies and private equity sponsors in workout scenarios, distressed M&A and change of control transaction. Mr. Messersmith received his J.D. from DePaul University College of Law and B.A from Ohio Wesleyan University.
