What led you to a career in the deal-making industry?
Chance. Early in my career, I worked with lawyers focused on company side representations in the restructuring space. They taught me how to build consensus for difficult deals. I loved negotiating with the parties and figuring out how to fit the pieces of the puzzle together to close the deal.
How does diversity add value in the deal-making process?
Diversity allows you to examine the problem from every angle. We all have different backgrounds and experiences. The more diverse the people at the table; the more ideas and options that will help lead to a consensual deal.
The most memorable deal I worked on....
The work I did on a plastics company. One of my first restructurings involving a three-week confirmation/valuation hearing, multiple appeals to the 7th Circuit and one appeal to the Supreme Court.
Advice for achieving success in the industry....
Your reputation is everything. Be direct and clear on what you can and cannot deliver. By doing this, you will earn the trust and respect of the person across the table.

Nancy is Chair of the Chicago Restructuring & Bankruptcy Practice. She focuses her practice on complex corporate restructurings and M&A transactions involving special situations and distressed companies, whether implemented in court or out of court. Nancy has represented private equity funds, debtors, sellers, purchasers, investor groups, and creditors in these matters. Nancy has experience in numerous industries, including manufacturing, real estate, retail, and gaming, with a particular focus on health care.
Education: J.D., from University of Michigan Law School and B.A. from University of Michigan.
