What factor has most led to your success in the restructuring industry... A combination of paranoia, persistence, creative problem-solving and an unusually broad business background. This allows me to quickly identify and more importantly, effectively communicate, the key issues, the mechanics to get to the endgame and then get to work. Having previously led my own shop for many years forced me to become a successful rainmaker. At a certain point, technical skills are a commodity and what matters the most is being a mensch.

What do you most enjoy about your career... First, every troubled situation is different, and restructuring is never boring. At the end of the day, this is a people business. People made the decisions that we find ourselves fixing and many people are affected by the outcomes. After so many years, I have many friends in this business and it’s fun to work with so many characters.

What factor has most led to your success in the restructuring industry... Leading restructuring engagements across a vast number of geographies with very diverse regulatory and idiosyncratic approaches to corporate failure and restructuring. The opportunity to serve clients in stress and distress situations in US, UK, Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, Mexico, and South and Central America has provided me with a unique, rich understanding of the different strategies and the limitations and opportunities that emerge from restructuring and turnaround situations. In addition, focusing in situations with increased complexity associated to cross-border / cross jurisdictional cases adds a distinctive skillset when advising either creditors or debtors.
