What led you to a career in the deal-making industry?
As a Soviet-Jewish immigrant, I began my life outside the rule of law. Pursuing a career in law felt, then and now, like the ultimate manifestation of the opportunities offered to me by this country. I wrote my first contract at six when I loaned my father $20, and the rest is history.
Most memorable deal I worked on...
Representing MatlinPatterson in the Foamex chapter 11 case. MatlinPatterson’s agreement to “credit bid” in that case represented a big leap of faith in me by a significant client and set a precedent in distressed M&A after the Lehman collapse and in the face of the flight of credit.
My number one advice for achieving success in the industry...
Find your voice and don’t let anyone make you afraid to use it, work harder than your competition, trust your instincts, and let precedent guide but not shackle you.
What you most enjoy about your career...
I enjoy the variety across industries and crises that a distressed practice provides, plus the camaraderie of the small-feeling restructuring community where so many colleagues have become great friends.
