What led you to a career in the deal-making industry?
It was the natural outgrowth of my involvement in cross-border restructuring work over the past two decades. Dentons’ global reach has enabled me to better support my clients in deals that require multi-jurisdictional expertise in different business sectors.
How does diversity add value in the deal-making process?
I’ve found that diversity and a wider range of experiences translate to a more resilient team with the ability to offer different points of view. This results in better communication and a more efficient resolution of impasses that invariably arise during negotiations, as well as more creativity in the structuring of deals to address the often competing needs of the parties involved. I feel fortunate to work with such a diverse team and for a Firm that truly supports and promotes diversity throughout its vast network.
The most memorable deal I worked on....
The acquisition of an ocean satellite launch business via a plan of reorganization. The transaction required governmental approvals in several countries and the continued cooperation of former owners and suppliers in the relocated and restructured business. Some of the client representatives were literally rocket scientists, and the transaction involved the intersection of US, Russian, Norwegian and Ukrainian law issues. It was a great cooperative effort by all involved.
Advice for achieving success in the industry....
Patience, communication and understanding of the objectives of all parties is key. It’s also important to address the counterparties’ concerns as fairly as possible within the confines of the transaction and, of course, having the right team members and expertise supporting the deal.
